When you ride solo, you ride at your own pace and to your own ability. When riding in a group, we ride in a staggered orientation.
We obey all traffic rules, with the exception of the speed limit in some cases. Typically, we do not exceed the posted speed limit by more than 10 km/h (6 mph).
Always keep in mind the 2 & 1 second rule. Keep 2 seconds behind the bike immediately front of you and one second behind the bike in the other tire track in front of you. If you can’t do both, the 2 second rule is the most important one. Many studies have shown that 2 seconds is the optimal following distance that allows to react and stop your bike safely if need be.
When coming to a stop, if you are in a corner, it’s best to get your bike back upright before braking if possible.
When making a turn, use your signals and hand gestures. Always check both mirrors and glance behind you in the direction of the turn to ensure the road is clear.
Taking turns when in a group ride requires that you have the skill and confidence to execute the turn while keeping pace with the group and staying in your tire track. If this gives you trouble, it’s recommended you ride at the back of the group and take the turn at a speed that you are comfortable with, but still stay in your own tire track. With practice you will be able to master this skill and be able to keep pace with the group. Once the turn is completed, get back to your 2 second gap.
